Kayaks
The kayak trails provide a scenic view of the beauty and splendor that lives on the Oleta River and the Intracoastal Waterway. Waterfowl feed along the mangrove-lined shore and the endangered West Indian Manatee and the North American Crocodile seek refuge from South Florida's crowded waterways. In our pristine mangrove forest you can see the Red and Black Mangrove with its unique habitat that encompasses Oleta River State Park and offers our visitors a serene get away with a picturesque view. The Mangrove forest which used to flourish here in South Florida is a very important part to our ecology. They are the nursery for: baby crabs, fish, lobster and shrimp; the beginning of the food chain, and provide shelter and protection for the animals which live in this habitat. Mangroves have been given legal protection because they reduce storm damage. They are considered important land builders as their roots collect sand and sediment; extending
the shoreline. Mangroves systems help purify water in the estuaries by filtering the runoff that flows into the estuaries from upland regions. Mangrove roots and dense vegetation help prevent shoreline erosion. Marine animals and birds produce offspring, nest and feed in the mangroves. Ospreys,
herons, woodpeckers, pelicans, egrets, flycatchers and vireos, are a few of the birds that nest in the mangroves. Wading birds such as the Yellow-Crowned Night Heron, the Green Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, and White Ibis feed in mangrove waters. Click here for more information on Oleta River's Flora and Fauna list.
