Oleta River State Park receives $25,000 from Coke Rewards

On August 18th, 2010 the Oleta River State Park received a $25,000 state grant from Coke Rewards for the parks “Trail enhancement project”.

For over 40 years, Coca-Cola has supported America’s national parks. Through their support of individual parks and the National Park Foundation, they’ve helped maintain and rebuild 260 miles of trails so families can be active together while enjoying the great outdoors. In the last 4 years they’ve donated over 4 million dollars to national parks for restoration and renovation.

To demonstrate their commitment to our parks they’re encouraging all families to come out and play this summer. You can also help support America’s parks by simply voting for your favorite. The national or state park with the most votes will receive a $100,000 grant from Coca-Cola. Vote as many times as you like from 7/29 to 8/31.

Sandbar Beach Bowl Game August 15

Are you ready for some football? Well, flag football that is. Its almost football season and the crew at Blue Moon is ready to welcome it in. On August 15 from 9 AM till 12 PM they will be hosting flag football games over at the Sand Bar. Simply rent a kayak and come meet them over there for some fun. When you come see them at the Beach they will give you a bracelet showing that you attended the flag football game. With that bracelet you are eligible for the raffles that they will be hosting over at the Blue Marlin Fish House at 1 PM.

Nursery Projects Aug 14th & 29th 2010

Urban Paradise Guild is preparing for a series of major Maritime Hammock Community Plantings at Oleta.

They operate the Oleta Nursery. Your help is essential to making our projects happen.

MISSION:
We need to catch up on maintenance projects there, as well as in-processing of new trees for the Plantings.
We will set up shade tents or work under sprinklers.
Tasks:
* Transplanting of seedlings and young trees into larger pots
* Weeding
* Stewardship around the Nursery
* Family Friendly
* Projects for kids of most ages

SCHEDULE:
8am Staff Orientation – Public Welcome. Set up for the day’s tasks.
9am Volunteers arrive, Intake and Orientation. Work begins.
Noon Put away tools, wrap up tasks.
Noon Picnic / BBQ begins.
1pm Kayaking for Volunteers
1:30 Oleta Project Meeting – Interns & Volunteer Staff. Public welcome.
3:30 Packed up, boats put away, and on the road.

BRING:
Please protect yourself by bringing & wearing the right gear.

Thursday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day.

Florida’s state parks are offering free admission Sunday, May 16, for Armed Forces Day.

The day honors those who have served in the military and their families, but everyone is allowed to enter free on those days.

In Miami-Dade, the deal includes Bill Boggs Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne, Oleta River State Park in North Miami and The Barnacle Historic State Park in Coconut Grove.

Students of Alonzo & Tracy Mourning High School Biscayne Bay Campus and FIU are hard at work transferring the nearly 1,200 red mangrove propagules, or seedlings, from inside the greenhouse to outside, where they will reside in the sun. It’s all part of a year-long mangrove restoration project. The project began in September 2009 when the cigar-shaped propagules were collected at a beach clean-up. Initially placed in plastic cups with salt water and gravel, the propagules were replanted in soil and pots once they were established. This September the mangroves will be replanted in Oleta River State Park, which lies just across the bay from BBC and is Florida’s largest urban park. In September 2010, after the red mangroves are replanted at Oleta, Jennifer Grimm, environmental coordinator at FIU’s Biscayne Bay Campus (BBC), will oversee the collection of another 1,200-1,500 red and black mangrove propagules that will be raised for replanting at BBC as part of a mangrove and wetland restoration project sponsored by Miami-Dade County’s Department of Environmental Resources Management.

Promises heart pounding excitement from start to the finish like nothing else.

24 HOURS OF OLETA LA ROOOTAAAA

This is a great single and double track off road Mt. Biking experience. The terrain is made up of a little bit of everything, rolling hills,climbs, single track, double track, roots (lots of them !!! ) gravel and concrete drive along with some technical sections. The course is beautiful and offers something for every Mt. Biker truly wishing to ditch the city. This is an open class category.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATIONS

The race will start at 9:30 AM and will finish at 10:AM. There will be a race day registration from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Race briefing will be at 9:00AM Award ceremony and Lunch will be at 12:00 noon. Dinner,Breakfast and La Rooootaaa lunch included.
