Nursery Projects Aug 14th & 29th 2010

Urban Paradise Guild is preparing for a series of major Maritime Hammock Community Plantings at Oleta.

They operate the Oleta Nursery. Your help is essential to making our projects happen.

MISSION:
We need to catch up on maintenance projects there, as well as in-processing of new trees for the Plantings.
We will set up shade tents or work under sprinklers.
Tasks:
* Transplanting of seedlings and young trees into larger pots
* Weeding
* Stewardship around the Nursery
* Family Friendly
* Projects for kids of most ages

SCHEDULE:
8am Staff Orientation – Public Welcome. Set up for the day’s tasks.
9am Volunteers arrive, Intake and Orientation. Work begins.
Noon Put away tools, wrap up tasks.
Noon Picnic / BBQ begins.
1pm Kayaking for Volunteers
1:30 Oleta Project Meeting – Interns & Volunteer Staff. Public welcome.
3:30 Packed up, boats put away, and on the road.

BRING:
Please protect yourself by bringing & wearing the right gear.
* Water Bottle, Refillable (we provide ice water)
* Hat, Sunglasses & Sun Shirt
* Sunblock & Bug Spray
* Closed-toed Shoes or Boots
* Picnic Lunch (we sometimes BBQ)

Useful Optional stuff:
* Personal Garden Gloves
* Trowel
* Swimwear for Kayaking or Swimming, and a towel
* Bicycle & Helmet (Park has free Helmets to load)

WE PROVIDE:
* Kayaks for Volunteers
* Endless Ice Water
* Iced-down Cooler for your lunch
* Tools
* Work Gloves (adult sizes)

FREE DAYS IN 2010

To celebrate special occasions, Florida’s state park will offer several free days throughout 2010.

  1. Saturday, July 17 – free day in honor of Recreation and Parks Month.
  2. Friday, Sept. 10-Sunday, Sept. 12 – free for Literacy Month for visitors who bring a library card, library book, or who donate a new or gently used family-friendly book.
  3. Thursday, Nov. 11 – Veterans Day.

Orienteering Course is now open!

Oleta River Adventure Association has opened a permanant orienteering course in the park.  Maps and compasses are available at the ranger station.  The fee is $5 which helps to maintain the course.

Mystery Mountain Bike Nite Ride

 

     WHEN: 7:30 – 10:00 p.m. Every Second Saturday

WHERE: Oleta River State Park 3400 NE 163rd St North Miami Beach , FL

Admission is free for ORAA members. $4 for others!

Mystery Mountain Bike Nite Ride Riders will meet in parking lot 1, you must have your own helmet and lights. Experience all that Oleta has to offer to mountain bikers… in the dark!
